Life Update| Fav Books of the Summer (so far) + Querying + College

Well hello there, friends. I know that I haven't been very active here on An Odd Blog, but life has been very busy, and it's only going to keep getting busier.

"Why have you been busy?you ask?

What a great question. Let me tell you in exhausting detail.

@Lake Diablo I LOVE YOU
Life Update.
writing. I finished editing and polishing Behind the Glass. I now feel that it's at a point where I can shove it at an agent (which I am doing 24/7. PSA: Writing query letters is almost harder than writing the novel itself. 2/10. would rather jump off a cliff.). I still have 6 other first drafts that need some TLC (including my favorite: the precious Strange Sights), tho all I want to do is write the other book ideas I have. Why are the writing gods so cruel??? Why can't I have a nice, easy amount (say, 4? 4 is good. but noOo. I have to have 24).
But in all seriousness, I am glad to have the hope of moving on to new projects glistening on the horizon once again.

reading. This summer has been a rollercoaster of literary finds. I've, so far, read 35 books this summer. Out of those 35, 5 of them were GEMS.

The Hate You GiveI don't think this is a perfect book. There were times the writing lacked a bit, a couple background characters that felt a little random, etc.
I don't really care about that stuff because the story matters so much. I'm not just saying that so people don't yell at me, but because I walked away from this book understanding a little bit more. And I think that's the whole point of the story.

The Language of Thorns: I want to a leatherbound edition that becomes a family heirloom, (and yes, I said the same thing in my Goodreads review. You have no idea how badly I want that leatherbound edition)

Beastly Bones: This book is one giant "aww!!". It's delightfully eccentric and fantastical with a Fantasy Sherlock. Sidenote: who wants to move to London with me?

Strange the Dreamer: wow. where do I start. It's categorized as fantasy-fiction, but it dips its toes into sci-fi, supernatural, and romance. Every moment in this story was a surprise.

ME: Oh, I see what's going to happen here. It's for sure going to go like *this*. #predictable!
BOOK: *does complete opposite*
ME: oops, haha, I meant it's going to do *this*.
BOOK: Wrong again.

A+. 10/10.

Red Seas Under Red Skies (Gentleman Bastards #2): I can't really describe this book very well (tho that says less about how good it is and more about my vocabulary skills).  IT'S GOOD but it is very vulgar/crass BUT GOOD.

school.I know school seems like an odd topic to include, but I have some exciting news (mainly exciting to me, and close family, but whatevs).
I started college!!!
  • It's online.
  • It's all at my pace.
  • Did I mention it's online?
  • aka pajama school.
My goal is to get my four-year degree in three years (why yes, I am an ambitious Slytherin, why do you ask?). I'm hype.

mental state. Despite being the busiest I've ever been, I'm the happiest I've ever been. Life is full and lovely and I am very very grateful. I have the occasional "ohnothere'samillionthingstodo" moment, but then I take a deep breath, a sip of tea, and tell myself "one thing at a time", and all is well.

summer fun. I went camping a million times, lounged on the beach, swam for .2 seconds in glacier water (and almost died. IT WAS FREEEZING), and ate ice cream many many times (#blessed)

How has your summer been? Are you as ready for rain as I am? Did you read any 5 star books? TELL ME ABOUT YOUR LIFE.

  2. DUDE. You are doing college, writing books, querying, reading ALL THE THINGS???? And people say I have dark magic?! I have nothing on this. This is AMAZING. (Also the Slytherin ambition levels are REAL and I am in full support. *Slythery hi five*) I also have fingers crossed for your querying eeeep, I swear writing pitches and queries and synopses are the actual pure hell of the industry. I don't think anyone enjoys them. We just have to do them to show we're ready to suffer or something?? Idk. This seems right to me.

ALSO STRANGE THE DREAMER IS MY LIFE and I would happily marry a Language Of Thorns tbh. That cover. Those STORIES. The art. 😍😍My heart can't take it.

    1. Yeah I also haven't seen another human soul in 15 weeks.

Thank you!!!! I am waiting on the edge of my seat for responses, and yes, this whole process was designed to make us suffer. But suffer we will if fame and fortune is on the line, because publishing a book clearly makes a lot of money.

RIGHT??? Those books are flawless. Beautiful.

It sounds like you're having an awesome time right now -- so glad! :D

I'm doing mainly online classes this semester, too. *nods* Hopefully it'll be a fun time.

    Enjoyed reading this! :D <3

  4. College in three years? Wow! *innocent Hufflepuff applauds ambitious Slytherin* Also, QUERY LETTERS ARE HARD. I always try to practice writing them since I was ten because they're rough-- I hope they pull through! I'm so happy life has been super lovely-- honestly, you have this in the bag.

  6. Well done for starting querying and college!

I've started the Jackaby series so let's see how this turns out.

And about five star books.... I don't actually have any. Like ever since I started blogging. I'm always afraid of giving books that amount, you know?

It's true that 5 stars is a risky rating to give a book. I hope you find a 5 star book for you to devour soon.
